What is Biochar?

Biochar is a form of charcoal produced by heating organic material — such as wood, agricultural waste, or plant matter — in a low-oxygen environment. This process is called pyrolysis. The result is a stable, carbon-rich material that can be added to soil to improve its health and fertility.

The use of biochar stretches back thousands of years. Ancient civilizations in the Amazon Basin created what is now called terra preta (“dark earth”) by incorporating charcoal and organic waste into the soil. These patches of land remain extraordinarily fertile today — a testament to biochar's remarkable staying power.

Modern research has confirmed what those early farmers discovered intuitively: adding biochar to soil improves its structure, boosts water retention, and makes nutrients more available to plants. It is a simple, natural amendment with lasting benefits for any garden or farm.

Locks In Nutrients

Biochar's porous structure acts like a sponge, holding onto nutrients and releasing them to plant roots gradually over time — reducing waste and improving plant health season after season.

Improves Water Retention

The tiny pores in biochar hold moisture in the soil, reducing drought stress for plants and cutting down how often you need to water — especially valuable in sandy or depleted soils.

Supports Beneficial Microbes

Biochar creates a habitat where beneficial soil bacteria and fungi can thrive. A healthy microbial community breaks down organic matter and makes more nutrients available to your plants.

Unlike compost or fertilizer that breaks down quickly, biochar is highly stable. Once added to soil, it can remain active for hundreds — even thousands — of years.

Sequesters Carbon

Because biochar resists decomposition, the carbon locked inside stays out of the atmosphere. Using biochar is a practical way to help offset carbon emissions right in your own backyard.

Raises Soil pH

In acidic soils common across the Southeast, biochar can help raise pH toward the neutral range that most vegetables and herbs prefer, without the need for lime or chemical amendments.
